How To Tell If You Have Been Hit By A Google Update

Many business owners have a negative perception of the SEO industry and rightly so. There are many unethical SEO companies out there and many business owners have been burnt by these companies that engage in shonky or unethical SEO practices that do not have long term viability.

So how can a business owner tell if they have been hit by a Google update?

Google Analytics shows you the overall trend in terms of your website and is the quickest way to determine SEO health. If your website is not healthy from an SEO perspective, it will require an experienced SEO doctor to determine the underlying reasons why your website is displaying signs of SEO disease.

Follow the simple steps below to check your website’s SEO Health

STEP 1: Go to Google.com/analytics and login with your Google Analytics details. Your web company can provide these details for you.

STEP 2: Locate your account and click on the All Web Site Data link

STEP 3: Go to the top right hand corner of the page and change the date to the beginning of the calendar year or as far back as you can all the way up to the end of the last calendar month

STEP 4: Locate the Acquisition heading in the left hand column and click on the Source Medium link.

STEP 5: Click on the google / organic traffic source link and make sure you are looking at the Month view (located in the middle right section of the screen)

If you can see a noticeable decline and plateau, there is every chance that your website has been hit by a Google update and requires the expertise of an experienced SEO specialist to determine the underlying causes that contributed to this decline.

Note: There may be legitimate reasons why your organic traffic has declined including incorrect configuration or filters that may have been applied to your account. Always seek professional SEO advice if you notice dramatic declines in your SEO traffic.
